currently reading shooting 007 book by great operator / DOP Alec Milles quite brilliant about about the relationships between operators / Dops.
When 85% of people say it takes 21 days to shoot a feature or 200hrs of footage to scan. how long it take? 5 years / 20years? never? in competition sense working on films for the next month, no footage for all productions completed so far.
'to be artist you must suffer.' (Sir Michael Caine) Its also difficult I feel work for no pay at seems one route.
I could watch most of the british / european masters and not shoot anything.
same working for free applies to the writing.
thanks for your thoughts BTW

The film and television industry is a tough business to be in at times and sadly there is never enough money available to make all the programming and films people want to make. Sadly a number of film makes are forced to try and make their productions asking crew to work for free or in collaboration. Neither of which really helps to pay the mortgage or rent and if the only work you are getting is to work for free then one has to ask yourself what is the point.
However if you have what it takes the things you need to do is
A work on enough productions to gain some decent credits under your name
B network with other crew to get to hear about other jobs
C find a good agent or join a diary service.

John, you've had some very good, constructive and specific advice in your other thread - that Dragon program sounds perfect.
