how does one get work in London post houses with a cinematography and post production MSc?

I was recently wondering about specialising in post prodcution and what wondering If any post houses in wardor street W1 had any job available?

Based in W Sussex and most shoots and post work tends to be in London.

Thanks

John

Go there in person, spend the day. Take your CV to each of the 100 or so post houses and offer your services as a runner. You will probably only talk to the receptionists, and it will be a quick in-out job, after which effort you can reward yourself with a pint at The Glasshouse (still less than £2 for ale?).

You can find the addresses using Google (don't give up till you find 100). These days, some of them may not want a paper CV, but at least you've made contact and can start your email with "Hi, you may remember me - I popped into xxx last Thursday and spoke to you about... " etc. In fact, you should do that even if they take your paper CV.

Then repeat this process once a month, while familiarizing yourself with the standard software, and hopefully earning some money elsewhere. Just knowing FCP7 (for example) probably isn't enough. Offer to edit people's Shooting People projects for 'expenses only' to build your experience.

Best wishes

Hello,

It would help if you knew what aspect of post-production you wanted to get into- offline or online editing, VT or other technical roles, audio, bookings, visual effects etc. researching this would help you get a job, and also know which companies specialised in which things. Also they are not all on Wardour Street but around Soho and sometimes even places like Shoreditch.

Anyway you sound a little inexperienced but the way I and the majority of people work in post was to start as a runner. Depending in staff turnaround you could be doing this for 3 weeks or a year but it's a good way to get an insight into the industry and decide which path you want to follow. Post houses get hundreds of applications so make sure yours stands out by researching the programmes they do etc.

Good luck
