INDEXHow to find a creative partner?
12 years, 4 months ago - Shaun Woods
Yes, you read it right, how do you find a creative partner?
Lennon and McCartney, The Righteous Brothers, Quentin Tarantula and Andrez Sekula, Queen Elizabeth II and Francis Walsingham.... David Mamet and Rebecca Pidgeon...
How do we go about finding our creative partner? Do we need one? Or is it a yearning to find someone who shares the same values, goals and ideas as you?
Personally myself, I feel as though I need someone to drive me forward and to drive in return, however, finding such a person is as hard task as finding a lover.
What advice do you have? Do you need one? Do you have one?
Any comments/feedback welcomed.

I am in the same dilemma at the moment, I think of ideas lots but how to develop them on my own; I rack my brains with frustration. I feel I need creative collaborations to develop my ideas into workable screenplay.

Hi Joyce, Suelan.
I'm not sure to be honest, I suppose I'm thinking out loud, pondering and reflecting on myself as an artist.
In the past, (In theatre), I've always found that stringent inner relationships within the team, help the efficacy an functionality of the creative processes that we use as Directors/Producers/Writers/Actors... So on and so forth.
But every once so often, you work with someone, who just ignites that flame of passion inside you, from your balls (or Ovaries in ladies), to your brain. (In a non-sexual way, of course).
I just wonder if it is something that is universally apparent to people's praxis. Some people work best alone, some people work best under pressure, some with time, some with anger.
I just sometimes wonder, what kind of creative I am. And more to the point, where my drive stems from.

Network. Meet a thousand bores to find the prince :-) But the bad news is that a lot of such partnerships arise out of early friendships, and for every Lennon and Mcartney there were 200 just Lennons, who never got anywhere. So luck is clearly a big part of it. All you can do is increase the probability by expanding the pool of people you know.

Hi Shauno,
I've never had a creative partner and never thought about it, but it makes absolute sense. You do need someone driving you forward and vice versa. I've been trying to do things on my own and it is way more difficult than I imagine it would be if you had someone to motivate you and bounce ideas off.
Could you elaborate on what you are looking for maybe?
Kind Regards,
Suelan

Marlom. I don't mind networking, but what I despise is sycophants, and our business is littered with sycophantic people. Most of the time, at Networking (and I've been to a fair share of them), I find myself schmoozing for the sake of schmoozing, when I should be there, being myself, in the room at that moment in time.
Good point on the Lennon factor; and I agree entirely... Your point sums up what I mean in a fashionable marquisette. It is luck, it is about seeing the opportunities for what they are, it is about taking that chance on a chance of a chance, it is about realising that life is too short and above all, it's about staring that belief in the face and saying: "Right! Let's do it!".
Cina: Yes, the creative partnership is such an important factor for me. A while back (Another life to be honest), I used to perform stand-up comedy. However; I utterly despised the banality of it. The creative orgasm from Stand-Up, is akin to a little necking session on a dancefloor; whereas film and media, for me, is a full on all day/night orgy of deplorable ill repute.
This is the way I feel, I won't lie and say otherwise.
Suelan: Your work made my mouth open, pupils dilate and heartrate race. I love it.

Sounds fun and intriguing! Are you looking for someone to collaborate with? I'm more of a Cinematographer so if you like any of my work and I "ignite a flame" :) let me know. www.suelan.co

Hi Shauno,
It's a difficult one to be sure, and I've made one or two real mistakes. However, I feel you should keep trying. I have managed to find a great script advisor - via Shooting People - so it can happen.
I'd be happy to liase with you and give you my two pennorth.
Best
Joyce

Like you, I find it ever so important to work with others and have been networking as much as I can , hoping that I will find my match in creativity. It can be frustrating cause I am proactively putting myself out there and don't really see anything shifting and yet like you, I feel that I am not being properly creative unless I have a partner to bounce ideas off + vice-versa. Good luck !
