How to find a house for a location

12 years, 2 months ago - Peter Butler

Hi everyone,

We're looking for a house to use for our short film. As usual we're on a mirco budget so can't afford a location specifically rented out for films.

We decided we'd look at holiday homes instead. The problem is that all the holiday homes seemed to be managed through an agent and the agent will only ask the owner for permission to see the property if a deposit is placed down.
Which is fine except that if we feel the property isn't suitable then we lose the deposit which so far seems to be an average of about £150.

So how do we go about finding a holiday let that's suitable without losing any money to begin with?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

I don't know if it'll be completely useful, but airbnb.com is a great site for people who put up holiday homes outside of the agency system. I've used it before - albeit for actually staying in, not filming - but it seems like they'd be more accommodating, especially since you can explain directly to the homeowners your needs.

ps: sorry I meant to add, in an ebay account just put holiday houses/cottages and they come up really easy to find.

Hi Peter,
Ebay is a great way to find cottages to rent and go direct through to the owner. You can just message them on there to enquire first and won't lose a thing.
I was thinking of doing this myself in the future as we rent a cottage for just £130 a week in December - however, it is in Scotland, but there's lots of cottages to rent nationwide.
Hope that helps.
