INDEXhow to increase uptake for a 48 hour film challenge
10 years, 2 months ago - Tom Middleton
We run Shortfilm48 (http://shortfilm48.com/)
Which is a 48 hour film challenge in its third year. We have now opened it up to accept submissions online, and therefore hopefully increasing participation.
Our prize package is a series of developmental courses, and training, aiming to help filmmakers up their game.
I would like to ask the filmmakers of Shooting people this:
What do you look for in a 48 hour film challenge? what attracts you to it? and what would you like more of in the prizes?
Any comments most welcome, and thought on what we are offering.
Thanks,
-Tom

Hiya Tom,
There are a couple of challenges with this kind of thing-
* Doing a rush job on production costs people the same, producing a worse result than a slow job - so many people who want to be known on their CV for quality may not be drawn.
* People are committing a weekend of their summer to making a project that isn't theirs. Well, it is and isn't theirs - they have to include your constraints, so the film they make isn't as applicable to other festivals. They may also not know what else is happening that weekend, or frankly be on holiday or not engaging for another reason.
* You've opened the competition to the world - yet prizes are local. If I can rent an Amira drama package wiith primes in Bristol for a few hundred quid a day, then a weekend hire from London isn't great when you consider transport. If you're international, it's of no value at all.
* Editing 101 course, however great the course, isn't going to be much use to someone whose film was good enough to win - and those who could get more value didn't win it ;-) Likewise other coaching/training - the winners aren't the people who need it.
On the plus side, your entry fee is reasonable at a fiver :-) Hope you get a few more entrants, but it is a lot to ask of applicants for not as great a reward as it may appear at headline level '£10k of prizes' (unless the winner is also based in London, for instance)

Hi Paddy,
Thank you for your answer.. I appreciate you comments.
based on the entrants from the last two years of running this comp, the majority of our entrants are young, or new filmmakers trying to prove to their ability.. and this is who the training courses are aimed at.. providing developmental opportunities.
But I would like to try and attract some of the more 'established' filmmakers, so what would attract you to such a comp as a prize, if it is not a cash prize?
