INDEXHow to take the first steps into stills photography?
4 years, 2 months ago - Matteo Perazzo
Hello everybody,
I'm going to make my first experience into stills photography, I am aware it takes specific skills / approach. For this reason, I was wondering to propose myself "for free", backing the main photographer, to make experience and sending my photos afterwards (I shoot 35mm B&W film, that could bring a different taste)
Is it the right approach? Forgive me if it's a basic question, I'm all ears for any advise :)
Thank you,
Matteo

I looked at your work, you can take a good photo, BUT it also looks as though you like a LOT of control. And it's not clear how fast you work.
The closest style of photography is wedding work - high pressure, no time, and while they want good pics, they are a bit annoyed by the process :-) with a bit of sports photography thrown in :-)
If you have done wedding work, and like it, your head is in the right place. If you like to work slowly, with lots of control, not so much.
You best bet is simply volunteering for people who know that they don't have a good photographer.
That said - for the more controlled work, the cast are going to love what you do:-)

Hi Marlom,
first of all, thank you very much for taking time to review my work and giving such precious advices.
The parallel you've made with wedding photography is very interesting, and gave me an idea of the required mindset. I started in street photography, which historically is chasing the famous "decisive moment", that probably is also similar to what it's needed here. But I got your point, crystal clear :)
For the moment, with the intent to make experience, I'd be happy to "pair" the current photographer at my own expenses, giving my shots in return. Do you think is it fair/realistic to propose?
Thanks,
Matteo

Well, "hi mate, look, at my own expense I'd like to shadow you in order to learn everything you know and then compete with you for the limited amount of paid work available", so, I'm going to go with "unlikely" :-)
