I am acting as the agent for a young actress but not in an official capacity as yet. Can I make that official without joining an established agency?

I have been acting as an agent for an 11 year old actress who I work really well with. The family know and trust me and have seen positive results of my work with their daughter. But it is not an official, contractual arrangement and we all want it to be so. How can I become an independent talent agent for her without being part of an established agency?

Andrew makes a very valid point, check with your local council as it varies regionally.

Talent agent isn't a reserved profession like Lawyer or Medical Doctor - you just be one.

That said, there might be a professional association you can join which will be helpful for contacts, legal support, etc.

I have just set up an agency via Spotlight. As long as your client is on Spotlight you can register with them as an agent simply by sending them your details (follow the links in the 'agent' section of the website). Your client will need to email Spotlight to let them know they wish to be represented by you and then you will start to receive breakdowns. If you have 5+ clients on Spotlight you will get the majority of breakdowns that go to all agents (not just individual actors).
Good luck.

Thanks guys, yes I am aware of the legal requirements RE working with children. Pretty much a basic essential for being an agent for a child actor but appreciate the heads up all the same. We've got a contract written up now and set up our own independent agency under the banner of our own film company but will run it past the local council to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed. Thanks fellas!

That is worth knowing, Dan, thanks very much. I will certainly look into that. Much appreciated!

I trust you're aware there's specific legal requirements regarding child actors? Off the top of my head there's maximum working hours, working on school days requires the provision of a tutor and I'm not sure they're allowed to work unpaid (CCP won't accept unpaid roles for children).
