I am currently making a documentary charting a year in the life of a Scottish rural community. Would a straight linear format work best?

Linear is the easy option, filming to a preconceived shot list. And if your time in the community is limited by the need to earn a living etc, probably the safe option. But if you are going to live in the community for the year, then you can shoot all the time and make the film in the edit. It MIGHT still be linear, OTOH it might not. But NOT is only an option if you have loads of footage that you don't expect to use but suddenly turns out to be crucial.
