ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXI am looking to buy a Canon EOS 5D Mark II or Mark III SLR with an 24-105mm. Any suggestions, any differences? I intend to use it mostly 4 filming.

Has anyone used both and can tell the difference?
Any other good options for the lense (Red)?
Regards,
Alexandra!!!

Just to chime in here, I'd say make sure you get the best lenses you can - it's really a lot about the glass you have. If you're using it for filming definitely get the Mark III (different frame rates are available on the III). If you need lots of wide angle or are planning to be shooting in low light a lot the 5D III is definitely the choice. If you're shooting more narrative fiction/closeups I would say the 7D is worth a look. Solid weather-proof construction, the output resolution for Movie Files is the same as the 5D (they both shoot 1920x1080 footage), and you'd have a tonne of cash left so spend on some awesome top end lenses. (Recommend the Canon 70-200 f2.8 - amazing for long shots and closeups if you have the space, and the 16-35 f2.8 for wider shots, with a decent 50mm f1.4 in the middle) (nb on the 7D these focal lengths would be equivalent to approx 100-300mm, 24-50mm and 85mm cos of the crop factor of the smaller sensor)

It depends on your budget?? I'd definitely go for the 5DMKIII over the 5DMKII, it's a no brainer but if you can't stretch to the £2200 plus (body only) get yourself a 6D, much cheaper whilst still being full frame with new tech/processing power advantages over the 5DMKII. Have a look on Canon's website, you can compare models side by side to see exaclty what you're getting for your money.

Hi Alexandra! I totally understand the confusion. I was in your situation a couple of years ago and I bought the 5D M II, of course the M III was about to be released :(. I found the forums in Vimeo the best in helping me to make a decision. Have a look to this one for example https://vimeo.com/forums/cameras_and_editing/topic:74113
Good luck with the hunting!
