I need to get a music video colour corrected and graded on a small budget. Any recommendations?

11 years, 9 months ago - Kash Chaudhary

I am and independent musician based in North West London.

The video was filmed on a HD Canon Camera and edited in Final cut pro. We have used a lot of stock footage in the video and want to get a consistent, glossy and professional look.

The song and video are controversial in sunject matter , you can have a look at the mp4 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pJihUF4l2Q&feature=youtu.be

Have a lot of projects in the pipeline, anyone interested in getting involved please get in touch.

Thanks,

Kash

Thanks for your detailed response Paddy.I have a musical background, and am starting to get more into the directing side now On this video I've worked with a friend who is a cameraman/editor and he handled much of the technical stuff and he is the one who suggested grading. I guess he's partly trying to avoid spending another couple of days work sitting with me sorting out the colour. :) I will attempt to get the Final product on a few UK music channels (Brit Asia, Channel AKA etc) but the content might be a problem for some.

Thanks Henry. Have you got any examples of your man's work? I will msg if I need further details.

Thanks for the advice again Paddy. Some of that is over my head but I've passed it on to the editor I am working with and we will go though it and discuss our next steps.

Ive had my videos played on these Channels before (over 5 years ago tho). I will check up on the updated spec requirements. I am making a censored version of the video you have seen, but there's only so much I can censor in a song like this. I am in the process of making a 'comeback' but have decided to go the independent route this time, I will have less support this way but complete creative control. I have a huge backlog of songs.., a lot that need finishing up, but at least an albums worth completed material. Tbh right now Im doing this for the love and what I believe in, but of course I'm hoping for some commercial success to keep 'funding the habit' so to speak.

Thank u all for the responses.

@Paddy.Pm me your email and I can send you a link to the finished product. .

@Kay thanks for your help earlier. The Maddy Mcann reference is used to bring up a fair point, something I've had to defend numerous times already, but is in no way intended to make light of a tragic situation, but more to expose the hypocrisy of the media treatment of the case. You are on my Facebook so you may have seen the posts I have written further explaining this.

@yen thank you, will bear that in mind. Am learning everyday

That sounds promising. Part of the punch of the song is the unflinchingness, but it can limit the airplay!

Hope it all goes well on the grade - your editor should understand all that for sure, but feel free to get in touch if not. I'll PM you my email address as I check SP irregularly sometimes.

Just watched the vid - there are already a lot of visual effects that have been applied to it, probably not the stage to apply many corrections as the effects will also get corrections applied, and frankly it didn't seem jarring to me. The promo makes use of high and low saturation and spot colouring as well as flares, etc., so not sure quite where you'd take it with a grade. Is there a particular look you're hoping for but didn't achieve? I can point you towards some people who can help, but it can be expensive, and that money may be better held for the next track promo.

It's certainly already above normal youtube production values, so where specifically do you want to take the promo that needs the extra work?

I like the track, too. I'd be interested to hear more from you.

Hi, if you have your own grader we could provide a private editing suite with Da Vinci 9 and professional grading monitor in Barking for just £80 a day. Otherwise, you can experiment on this with our own man for £160 a day.

Hi, I've just watched it - and I like it a lot.
I don't think you need to do anything else to it at all. Often when you have been working on something as complex in the editing as this you can get so sucked in and involved that you can always see 'just one more thing' that will make it perfect. There comes a time when you should say - 'that's great, that's good enough'. I think it is already there, but that is up to you.
If you are going for something more, make sure you have archive copies of this version - it's hell when 'just one more thing' does the opposite of making it perfect.
Good luck with it

If you're determined to do a grade/colour (and it's not a bad idea in itself) then you may effectively need to unpick the sequence, colour, then reapply the effects. Not necessarily, but at least make sure you have that option, That *may* mean exporting the EDL into a common format so you can use the DaVinci, for instance. In short, it may be a bit of a faff, so check it's worth it first. Have you tried sending the track to your target TV stations to see if they'll get behind it before spending that money?

Henry's offer sounds good value, FWIW. You could easily spend 4-5 times that/day in Soho at a good facility.

If TV says they will take your track, ask them about what technical formats/specs they require. TV specs are tighter than online, and they may have specific delivery format requirements. Best get it all sorted in one go. Non-terrestrials may not be as picky as the terrestrials, but there will be some technical hoops. Then speak with whichever colourist you use and make sure they can finish it to the format specs the stations mandate.

Are you starting out, have you got an EP, etc? It may make good sense to get a few tracks lined up with promos so you can build on any successes you get from the first without a long delay. If you have management they may say the same, so you can build momentum into a tour/merch etc.

Hi Kash
I am going to pass your email on if you don't mind. I think it can be more shocking and more contraversial although reference to Maddy Mcann may not be allowed on the vid.

Will email you.
Best wishes, KA
