I wish to make a biopic based on a living person's life - is it a legal requirement to gain their permission first?

The difficulty is that the subject is a very high-profile figure, and receiving a response from them or their representation, is unlikely. I'm also not keen on getting sued, so if anyone have any experience in this area, and can advise about how to safeguard against potential pitfalls I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Ciaran

It's not necessarily required, but my gosh it'll be a lot easier with permission than without it - access to materials and people for instance. Also remember you have a line to walk between truth and fiction, and if the person is powerful or connected you may find them challenging even true events - in the courts truth is usually an absolute defence, but being able to afford to go to court means you'll likely fold immediately when they threaten unless you've something quite special and maybe a broadcaster ready to stand behind it.
