I'm thinking about shooting a (1 day) short over Christmas holiday week - curious if anyone has done this?

Your thoughts/experiences re crew availability, weather (mostly indoor and night scenes so light not decisive issue).

Is this a really bad idea?

I have done it, it took us just under 12 hours, keep the story simple and the script tight.

Here was the result..... https://youtu.be/sUpIIcDmjK4.

Good luck.

Sounds like a good constraint to work within. Filmmaking is all about getting the best out of what you can get. There are some great kit deals over Christmas for instance, and plenty of people who by boxing day are looking for any excuse to get out of the house.

I say go for it

Good point, hadn't thought of the possible discounting. Thanks!

Yes, hit up the hire companies and ask, most will be happy to get something instead of nothing and it's a terribly dead time.

Don't leave this to December to ask people, and have lots of backup plans, and confirm nearer the time. While all the above is true, unless you are paying crew & actors a proper rate, working over Christmas holidays is asking a lot of people to give up their leisure time with family. Expect some dropouts.

Bear in mind most of the camera/grip/lighting rental houses & other facilities will be closed between Christmas & New Year, and those that aren't will run with a skeleton staff, so you won't have the back-up you might otherwise rely on. You may have to pick up gear before Christmas & keep it safe & insured until after New Year.

If you can hang on until January, you'll find that's still a quiet time for most rental places & you'll still get a good deal - and it's a really good time to get crew. Almost all of the freebies I've done have been in Jan or Feb...
