I'm thinking of making a web series in the UK, do I need to register with the ATVOD?

I'm thinking of making a web based sitcom, and based on the guidance document on the ATVOD website at http://www.atvod.co.uk/uploads/files/Guidance_on_who_needs_to_notify_Ed_4.0_Feb_2014.pdf I'd need to both notify them and pay a fee, despite not being a commercial organisation. Has anyone on here has any experience with this?

I initially thought it applied to service providers, not content producers, but it appears that's not the case. I've emailed ATVOD and I'll update this question when (or if) I get a response.

According to the document, the ATVOD rules apply to on-demand services and service providers and not an individual web series. So unless you want to start your own on-demand service, you should be fine.

You could always try talking to them, because it really very much depends on your content.

Personally I think that http://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=3bcefed3-44fe-4e2e-bb9b-840c4a85507b pretty much exempt most web series if it's the usual short form material

ed, and may include public service material, section
2.4

However, it does not include user-generated video content posted by private individuals for non-economic purposes of sharing and exchange within communities of interest.

If you are paying everyone ' union rates ' for this web series and expect a return then maybe these organizations need to be taken into consideration.

You need to be aware only regulations of YouTube, DailyMotion or whomever you use as a platform and what they deem acceptable.

The UK Web Series Creators Group on LinkedIN might be a good place to exchange advice further. They also hold monthly meetings for creators.
