INDEXInsurance for Driving Scenes
8 years, 12 months ago - Michael Graf
Hi all,
I'm producing a short film which contains driving scene. I've been talking to Performance and they would only insure the equipment, if the scene is shot on private ground.
Does anybody have experience with public liability, 3rd party and motor (for prop car) insurance?
Many thanks for your help.
Michael

Taking action vehicles on the road is surprisingly awkward - you have an actor who has dual roles of acting and driving.
If you can use a private road (they're dotted around) it'll save you no end of grief. Open road, look at a low loader.
You can always ask Integro to quote you for a policy, BTW.

The pay out could be huge in event of accident on private or public land. So insurers quotes will be steep. Film London (Microwave) did a talk last year advising against scenes in moving cars for this reason as it can take up your whole budget.
I shot a scene with actor last year and had the actor in the passenger seat imitating driving. I flipped the image in the edit and it works fine.

Tony, brilliant idea. Although you'll have to make sure there are no signs or other cars, and that your actor and clothes are symmetrical... Did that exempt the shoot from insurance?
