insurance for hiring out kit

12 years, 2 months ago - Steve Micalef

I have decided to set up an equipment hire company, mainly for film & video kit, but also for exhibition / event kit.

I have done this before, but not for a few years, so I am a little out of date as to the best insurance cover out there for hiring out / in / cross-hiring kit. My "fleet" is currently quite modest, at about 20-30K, with nothing worth over £5K individually.

Would love to hear shooters' experience and recommendations on this. Obviously I would like it to be good value considering the relatively low value of my kit, but don't wanna shirk on quality. Would particularly like to hear warnings about companies who don't pay out!

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve
I know it's normal (certainly with bigger companies) for the person hiring the kit to have their own insurance cover for that. Not that that really answers your question.
But I was really curious as to what kit you do hire as we have a production running 5-27 June and there's still some bits to get.

Hi Steve
we hire out our kit too (cameras, lights, jib, dolly, sliders, crane, follow focus, dslr rigs, hd monitors, tripods, 35mm lenses, zfinders, evfs, shoulder mounts, wireless video sender, remote follow focus, matt boxes, filters, some grip, chroma key, mics, sound mixers, boom poles, pre-amps, radio mics and more) but we expect the hirer to have their own insurance as we found it too costly to get hired-out cover. We often send people to 'performance insurance' as they offer an online quote and online payments system to enable them to buy at the last minute. Some of the larger hire companies build in insurance into the hire cost and then spread their bets just like an insurance company.

If you find a reasonably priced insurer that does cover you for hired out gear i would like to know please.

thanks
