Just finished editing a film in which I used audio of radio broadcast to situate the period. Do I need to seek copyright permission from radio station

I used old radio broadcast of LBC in my feature film edit to situate the period. Do I need to sick copyright permission from LBC or the individual broadcaster?

Your starting point is LBC. But if they mess around, just fake your own "broadcast". It might well be cheaper and faster.

Faking it is quick and relatively easy. and you can have a bit of fun with it, slanting it the way your film is going to go. Make sure you get the accents and nuances of past radio right though!

Completely agree that faking it is better and easier in the long run. The same is true with using classical music - even though the music itself will be public domain as it's so old, recordings usually aren't and are subject to copyright. I've certainly made more than one performance of a classical piece of music to get around that for clients before now.

Of course, if it's a short film done for education / fun then I doubt LBC would care much and would probably just give you the rights no problem. If it's something bigger then they might want a fee.

Just my tuppenceworth. Hope it all works out for you. :)
