KICKSTARTER- is there a point?

9 years, 8 months ago - Bracken Burns

Hey guys..
I am in the middle of a kickstarter for a pilot..
Wondering what your thoughts are on the matter. I don't like begging so kickstarter wasn't my first choice. But I think the pilot is AMAZING and I really want to help it to be made!

Have a look and let me know what you think?

I can only say whether or not it appealed to me, and TBH I don't think it's tight enough. You could probably lose the entire first minute. I only kept watching because I'd decided to watch right through.

LOVE the theme music though.

So then I went to look at the trailer. Which is seriously way better.

Total cheeze, luverly.

I would probably have cut the trailer down to about 2mins (always keep them wanting more), and then have had the spiel about "now, imagine what we could do with .......".

Interestingly I watched the trailer by going to the actual site, not by scrolling down, because the page was so perfect as it appeared that I didn't clock it as scrollable...

Good luck :-)

Actually I'd take a step back and look at what you've got already - the trailer on your site runs to 5:37 which is half of your projected episode length, so you're not lacking in material. You've got some great cast, superb branding, smashing soundtrack. Will remaking the same but longer actually help? What you need is interest.

No matter what you make, you'll have to reshoot for TV anyway - there will be a stack of contacts and clearances a foot thick, and if for instance Vas can't do the series because he's in a fantastic new British comedy featuring... (Ok, I'll stop there). But the essence is the same - you'll almost certainly have to reshoot from scratch as every broadcaster has different needs (BBC2 may take 15', Comedy Central may want 11' or 22', ITV won't touch it under 24', whatever) and will have their own casting suggestions. So, the goal is to get interest from a broadcaster/commissioner. For that, they need to know the production company can deliver a series (quite different from a one off). For that reason, best approach might be through a production company that's done it all before.

How about recutting the trailer (so it doesn't feel like I've already seen the episode) to a couple of minutes and using that in a package to start hitting up Baby Cow, Thames Talkback, or whoever is still doing comedy. How about finding the production company behind People Just Do Nothing, for instance? Hit them up with the trailer, story and character Bible, and let them have a think. Those guys get to sit at top table. That would be my thought anyway to save you rework and without significant cost to you.

Alternatively, it might help to break the £10k down at least to topsheet level. Favours don't often carry over if other people are getting paid/indulging. Maybe it's £8500 after platform fees and keyring/postage costs. What are cast costs, legals, crew, art, locations, kit etc costs. Don't forget the post! If that's a realistic £8500 then people won't worry about failed delivery, if the budget is actually £15k, explain where the other £6500 comes from. You get my drift :)
