Licensing agreement template UK

8 years, 4 months ago - Darren Giles

I've had a query about licensing a short 1min promo piece I produced a while back. The company in question want me to add their logo and a branded end frame to use on their corporate website, youtube channel and social media . Just wondering if anyone has a general licensing agreement template with wording relevant to UK law or know where I could find one? All the ones I've found online relate to US law. Any advice gratefully received !

Best done by simple letter. You can't just copy/paste templates because they won't fit your deal.

What rights/permissions are they getting from you? What rights permissions are you explicitly keeping?

The most simple is "BigCo buys outright all worldwide rights, forever, for £. I retain the right to have authorship displayed and to use in my own promotion, e.g. website and showreel". But if you're only selling them a non exclusive limited use, define what you are selling them. As soon as you put it in writing, if they don't like it, they'll tell you, and you can bail or discuss a different price :-)

Thanks for the reply Marlom - it is a very simple agreement so this could be the way to go, I want to retain rights to use the material for my own purposes and ensure they only use for website, youtube & social media channels. No alterations or selling the material on.

Yep, if you sell them a perpetual, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use the film in xyz places/circumstances (eg online at upto 480p, whatever you agree) for £xx then you can add a clarification that any re-edits, other uses (eg cinemas at 1080p) are subject to renegotiation.
