Location hunting for a spaceship interior

10 years, 11 months ago - Aurora Fearnley

I'm making a sci-fi short film set on a spaceship. At the moment we're not having much luck using the regular sources (screen agencies and locality) to hunt a good location and we are currently weighing up the cost of a set build instead. We do have a budget, but can't afford over a grand a day on a 4 day shoot.

Reaching out into the community I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

The interior is a run down mining vessel, not the squeaky clean star trek look, we want industrial or aquatic. Please PM me if you've shot somewhere great and could recommend a location. (Ideas both inside and out the box are appreciated.) We are happy to scout places throughout the UK.

Cheers Filmmakers!

You say you want a space ship. What exactly is needed? Are there lots of corridors? Very wide vistas? Are there scenes with large numbers of characters? Is there an exterior shot of the space ship? What camera are you using? Is the background in focus. Do you need mains power? I suspect the location companies would need this detail. There are ways of providing all your shots for very little expense. If only we knew what they are. Let me give an example: I need a theatre with a small stage 5 ish metres wide, with an arch and tabs/ curtains and seats raked, minimum 50. 10 miles radius of Fulham with parking. 2 actors on stage they must be able to walk off the stage and sit with the audience. For 2 days shoot. Exteriors would be useful but I can shoot that elsewhere This is a 12 minute comedy. Along the lines of Noises On - Any thoughts? I would be grateful.

Put "green screen spaceship" into YouTube ,there's a great selection of very good backgrounds.

Have you considered green screening this?

Appreciate you all taking the time to get back.

Dry Dock subs and boats were my first thought and we've looked at a few. The cheapest comes in at 1.5K a day, which adds up fast for a 4 day shoot. They are tough to accommodate our large scene with 5 actors and then crew in that space too.

Green screen isn't an easy option. Maybe I'm a bit old school and like the actors to have an environment like 80's space films where the ships were built. Going down that route is completely dependent on the VFX artists attached and their time and expertise and how much that will cost.

Thanks to everyone that got in touch privately with suggestions too. Seems like a lot of old industrial buildings are out of use, will keep looking. Cheers

Andy - contact all the Am Dram groups and Schools in your target area. They often use unknown theaters. For example in Gloucester most people think that there are NO theatres. Some would name the Guildhall Arts Ctr and perhaps the Picturedrome, but I'm aware of at least two others just used by AmDram plus one pub function room that is a basic theatre. Also schools with theatres - and more than you might think have one, including Junior Schools. In my suburb of 5000 people two out of the three schools have a theater.

Do you need low/no gravity effects? I could help with this, but the costs are probably beyond a short film, at about £8k
Good luck with it all,

Theres an old Russian sub down in Rochester which one of the 48hr Sci Fi competition groups shot on a couple of years back. Its got a nasty list BUT with a good imagination its got a good chance of being a spaceship….

I don't know of anything specific but maybe a ship? Something could perhaps be worked out with the owner of something in dry dock awaiting repairs etc. just a thought. Old industrial buildings are getting harder and harder to find too, so whatever you end up using, please keep us all informed? Good luck.
