Looking for 5.1 studio in Yorkshire/Leeds

1 year, 7 months ago - Robert Drane

Hi everyone,

Hope you're doing well!

Do you know of any post-production sound studios available to hire in Yorkshire/Leeds that are capable of 5.1 surround?

In my role as composer and sound editor, I've just finished the music and sound mix for a client's documentary. They're happy with the result and asking to extend the project to include a 5.1 surround mix.

My current studio is setup for stereo, so I'm looking to hire a studio somewhere in the Leeds/Yorkshire area that supports 5.1 - however so far my Google searches have had little success.

If you know of anywhere, please let me know!

Thanks!

Robert

There is a way of doing it without visiting a studio or having a 5.1 setup of your own. Some years back, I had less than 24 hours to produce a 5.1 surround mix for a 28 minute film. I'd never mixed in 5.1 before and did not have the facilities. I did a bit of googling and discovered a plug-in called Halo Upmix - https://nugenaudio.com/haloupmix Back then (and probably still now) it was available free for a trial period with no restrictions. I downloaded it and a few hours later I had produced a 5.1 mix. I used one of its presets and only had to tweak the levels in a couple of places where the signals went a bit high on some channels. I used it in Premiere. You have to create a 5.1 audio track first, which is easy if you know how (YouTube will help). The mix sounded fine at the cinema where the film was shown. Better than fine – I was amazed at how good a job it did. And it didn't cost me a penny thanks to the unrestricted trial period, which hopefully is still a thing.

I should point out that HALO takes a stereo mix and turns into a 5.1 mix. In my case, it quite brilliantly separated voices from music and other sounds.

Hey Alwyne,

Thanks for your reply! That's really helpful. I'm not sure it will be appropriate for this particularly project (looking to do a full mix) but I'll keep this one in mind in case it's helpful for the future!

Best wishes,

Robert
