ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXLooking for a low budget voice over recording studio, ideally in central London. Any suggestions?

I need to record 3 short pieces of dialogue by 3 different voice over actors simulating voice messages being left on an answering machine.
Each piece of dialogue is maximum 1-2 minutes long (30 minutes to an hour of time required assuming multiple takes).
Any suggestions for a location, person, company that would be able to offer this type of service at a low to no cost?
Many thanks,
Igor

Do you really need a studio to record something that you want to sound like it was recorded on a phone? You could use... your phone. There are plenty of smartphone recording apps that would make the process easier. Find a quiet room, create a little booth by hanging duvets and such to deaden echoes, and do it there with your phone. You could at least experiment with that method before involving a studio. It might do the job.

I would try Old Street Studios - they do 1hr minimum @ £60/hr for VO recording. Here's their website: http://oldstreetstudios.com/

No need for a studio. Find a cupboard, hang a blanket over the door and half shut. Put further soft things inside with the talent. Stick a mike in and away you go.

Hi Philip, thanks for the tip but as I mentioned to Alwyne above, I understand that doing it myself is an option but I'm curious about the going rates for low budget studios.

Hi Igor, depending on the voices you want to record I'm happy to offer some suggestions of voiceover artists who do multiple accents and have home studios. They could record the pieces and send them back to you perhaps? You could negotiate the rates with the individuals, or just offer to pay X amount to each one. Also you'll save on the studio fee, so you can use that on the VO artists instead. Just a thought.

Shelter Studios and Orpheus Studios, both on Kingsland Road are both friendly and good. Shelter is more geared to music, but have recorded voice over in both.
