Looking for a pub to film a short film - two days. London or just outside London.

5 years, 9 months ago - Will Liney

Hello,

I am looking to shoot a short film in April (6th and 7th - Monday and Tuesday) 12 hour shoot day is ideal but I can work with less shooting time ie - 9-5 before the pub opens.

Ideally I want to lock off the whole pub but this is negotiable. The idea is to get somewhere slightly well worn and dingy.

Budget of just over £1k for the two days. Any suggestions of where I could go or pubs that anyone has shot in before with this sort of budget??

Any advice would be amazing.

Will

Have you tried googling "film friendly pubs" ?

Hey Alwyne - thanks for your comment. Yup tried that - it comes up with the same location agencies every time!

Film Offices can be good for this sort of thing - try http://www.surreyfilmoffice.co.uk/ and https://kentfilmoffice.co.uk/ if they’re not too far out

Hey, have you checked any of these websites? Usually quite a few pubs listed on there specifically for filming/shoots

We used these quite a lot for our shoots with much smaller budgets so there should be quite a few options for you.
Another way would be to find a pub you're interested in and chat with the owners - they might already have a day when they're closed or open to shooting around their opening times.

Amazing! Thank you both - I shall give all of them a go!

We have been chatting with the owners of one pub and slowly reaching an agreement but I am still looking around!

About 9 years ago, I used The Albion down Hammersmith Road for filming. I also used it 3 years ago for auditions / rehearsals as they have an upstairs bit.

Or there's another one that was used for one of my scripts called The Castle in East Aldgate. It was used for 5 days and was dingy looking at the time but this was about 10 years ago too!

The problem is that if they shut entirely for you for 2 days, what regular custom they had now goes elsewhere, so you're not just depriving a pub of 2 days trade, but longer term regulars. That's where you may find resistance. Pub back rooms, however, are much easier to get.

Hi Will

You could try The George in the Isle of Dogs, less than 100 yards from Crossharbour DLR station and plenty of parking. I filmed a short documentary film there a year or so ago. Filming mainly outside of opening hours, or you might be able to use one bar space, but you may have noise from the other bar. The road outside is quiet. Its got that nice pub look and feel and has quite a history.

Hi Will

I know a perfect old Irish pub in Walworth, SE17. They may well be up for it. Happy to pop over, make enquieries and send you some pics.

PM me if you're still looking.

Best,
Sanda
