Looking for actors for YouTube project

2 years, 5 months ago - Mark Simpson Wedge

Hello. I'm an autistic YouTuber from Leicestershire and I'm new to this site.

I'm looking for people to play characters for my YouTube project "Defenders". Because I have a very low budget, they would have to be volunteers. So far, I've advertised on Backstage and StarNow, I've asked every theatre and drama society in Leicestershire if they can help and I've even asked some clubs and groups. But I still don't have enough people.

I've advertised on this site but I do have limited time as I want to start filming in April. If I don't get any replies to my ad, what should I do next? I've been working on this project for months and I don't want to give up on it, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe consider shooting in London?
There might be a bigger talent pool.

Well one of the locations I want to use is in London, but I don't need it until September.

Hey Mark,
London locations are likely to require permits or (if you're lucky) permissions from generous friends to use their house, garden etc. I made a short 2 min film a couple of years ago and with payments to crew, actors, site permit (Film London), editing, and travel expenses (for a day) it came in at £1900 for the afternoon. And that was cheap. Alternatively you could invest in the Guerilla Filmmaker's book which might offer ideas as a work around.

A film can take years to make from conception. I would suggest that you take the time to earn some money to pay the actors for their work we need to eat and pay rent and then perhaps you will attract some better talent. I have worked on a few projects with no pay and received nothing for my work not even some of the footage. Whenever people don't get paid you will be begging everyone for everything but when you pay people for their time and effort you can ask them to to do what you want within reason. When you don't pay anything things can go wrong and unfortunately usually do this creates problems and people can just walk away with the sound or the footage or something. In the world of film making it all needs to be financed. Good luck with your project.
