INDEXLooking for advice on DVD disk authoring, duplication and printing
12 years, 5 months ago - Emma Dove
Hi folks,
I've been looking in to getting some of my films duplicated on dvd with dvd authoring and on disc printing. However I've started to think that in the long run I might be better off getting my own software and printer to make my own discs. Can anyone advise me on the dos and don'ts?
If I do go down this route, I am looking for:
- A good dvd authoring software to create simple but professional-looking dvd menus.
- A good quality printer for direct on-disc printing (preferably one that doesn't cost a fortune every time I need to replace a cartridge)
Any advice on either of these would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

You'll also want to invest in a better DVD. Use watershield style DVD-Rs and your inkjet won't smear or smudge (even when contacted by water after the ink has dried (which takes a few seconds). They're also a better quality disc, though they cost a bit more. If you're looking into making larger runs of your duplicates, you may want to investigate a robot duplicator (more expensive, but if you're doing 1000s of discs, it starts to make more sense). Primera makes a good version of this, for one, that I've had fairly good success with. If it's of any consequence, your DVDs, aren't going to be copy protected if you author and print yourself - that happens in replication, not duplication.

Emma, I've used a company in Wales to do my DVD's. They were great and the dvds were less than a quid each. Worth a try if you have a small budget. http://crashediting.co.uk/whoweare/
If you need a simple authoring job and you're not in a rush, drop me a line I have some time and I may be able to help.

Hi Emma,
I second that. I use DVD Pro and an Epson printer - which they don't make any more.
I've just Googled for DVD printer and got the link below.

I've saved so much cash by doing this.
Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for all your responses and suggestions, very useful!
I have looked in to DVD Studio Pro but apparently it was discontinued in 2006 (?). I realise that Final Cut Pro X can author basic dvds but does anyone know of a more professional software for authoring your own dvds? I heard Adobe Premiere Elements includes good authoring software?
I am considering the Canon PIXMA iP7250 as a possible printer - it does direct on disc printing...
Thank you Mark for suggesting the company that you used, I think I have decided I am going to try and do my own as it will be a lot cheaper in the long run...
Thanks very much Eli for the DVD suggestion, I had no idea about this so it's very good to know.
