Looking for up-and-comings to collaborate with

9 years, 3 months ago - Jonathan Taylor Davies

I'm looking for newbie / up-and-coming / new starters to collaborate with on a number of up coming projects.

First of all I'd like to be very clear that I'm not targeting this at the large number of experienced, trained, paid professionals on this site, nor do I really think it's an appropriate career step for anyone with a few credits to their name - if you can get paid for your work, get paid for your work!

I'm looking for people like me, at an early stage at which finding paid work is very difficult and you're not using your film activities as any kind of primary income - new starters, people looking to build up a portfolio either professionally or for film school applications etc, current film students eager to get involved with creative projects.

Right now I'm working as director, sound recordist, DoP, editor, and often writer on all of my projects but as my skills and ambition grow so do the technical and time demands! I'm now at a stage where I need to collaborate with editors, VFX, sound editors and recordists to be able to adequately finish my shorts without undergoing the gargantuan task of undertaking all of the above single handedly! Post-production is a mountainous slog at the moment.

As it stands I have a pile of comedy shorts scripts in pre-production for a YouTube channel I'm building as an opportunity to showcase and develop my comedy directing, plus a platform for my writing collaborators, and a couple of short films in pre-production intended for the festival circuit 2017.

What I'm looking for is a team. I come from a theatre and improv background and am well networked with a pool of actors in the East Midlands and generally have no trouble with casting. I also find I am doing fine with co-writers, though I am definitely open to collaborating with any new writers who want to work with a director on realising their shorts, drama or comedy.

However - I would be very interested in working with Editors / VFX / graders (inclusively or separately) from anywhere in the world as I am happy to work remotely, and more locally with camera operators / sound recordists / runners who are ideally located between Sheffield and London in the UK, but broadly centred around the Midlands.

As I hope I've made clear I'm not in a position to pay anyone so I am NOT expecting responses from film school grads / experienced professionals / anyone with a long list of credits to their name as I think it's quite unfair for you to work for free (if you WANT to peddle your skills for free, I am obviously willing to talk to you)!! I am interested in anyone who would like to work as part of a team, develop your skills, build a portfolio and get some credits, etc. Re: editors own equipment and software (I work with Premiere Pro / AE. FinalCut, Avid etc also fine) are obviously necessary along with some evidence that you know how to use said software, likewise for VFX / grading / etc. Happy to work with camera operators who are inexperienced but willing to learn but prefer someone who is confident with the technical side of things already and preferably has some own equipment e.g. monitors. Equipment preferable for sound recordists but hire is ok so long as you know how to use the equipment I'll be hiring!

My email is jonathantaylordavies@gmail.com, I know this is quite a long post so thanks to anyone who's read through and if you want to know more about me or what I'm working on, comment below or email me!

Best wishes, all x x
