INDEXLooking to assist a talented DoP... advice wanted.
9 years, 9 months ago - Lee Burnett
I have been working as a filmmaker for a few years on various projects with varying budgets. I have worked as DoP/Director on a few low budget films, as well as camera op on a lot of other jobs, and feel like I've got a good amount of experience under my belt. Working with RED, FS, C300 etc.
My aim is to end up as a cinematographer for doc / feature. I know that can sound extremely naive but I understand the hard work and skill that goes along with that and I don't for a second think it will be easy.
BUT, I'm at a point where I really want to work under and learn from someone who really knows what they're doing. I appreciate that I may be developing my skills the way I'm working, but to really get to the next level I need to be around talented people in the industry, helping them and watching them closely. For that reason I'm moving to London and want to find someone to work with to learn from.
Is there any advice out there on how to assist a DoP for a couple of months? Is it really just who you know, or are there any ways of contacting people to offer my work?
I'm developing my new showreel now which is a far cry from my older ones and I think shows a lot more understanding of motion, light and camera technique, but am I just wasting my time emailing this to DoP's offering assisting work?
Advice appreciated
