Looking to hire some lights for high speed filming in the South West, UK.

I have a shoot coming up on the RED EPIC where we'll be shooting at 300FPS. We're based in Bristol.

I've looked into lighting for high speed and have found some good information. So have a fair idea of what I'm looking for. However there are a few options so I'm happily open to suggestions.

Here's what I've already discovered online for high speed lighting:

-HMIs can Arc Wander, therefore non specialist HMIs are not recommended

-LEDs are usually flicker free if not dimmed.

-Tungsten are flicker free from 5K upwards for 240V, 2k for 110V.

-Tungsten lights are a grey area. We're shooting powder paint, meaning the area will be clad with plastic. Big tungstens could generate a lot of heat. We discussed the idea of hiring a generator to run at 110V with some 110V wired 2Ks to save on heat against 5Ks. But this will probably still be too much.

-Combining multiple tungstens via separate 3-phase power can mask flickering (however our location does not have 3-phase power).

With all this considered, I'm thinking some bright LEDs maybe the best option.

Can anyone recommend a place for hire of these in the South West?

Failing that, I've heard K5600 Joker Bugs, 800 or 1600 would be suitable (heat maybe a problem though). Again anywhere in the South West hiring?

As mentioned, open to further suggestions on something suitable.

Many thanks.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Shortly after writing this I contacted Visuals whom have forwarded my query to 180. Hopefully they'll have something suitable!

Thanks,

Tim

As Paddy says call 180 Rental at the Bottleyard on 01275 836 750 and talk to Russ Greening they have tons of options. I have a set of 6 daylight balanced Coollights LED's which are about 3kW equivalent but I don't think they'll be big enough to do what you want.

Most lights should be flicker-free at any frequencies as low as 300Hz if you're using quality ballast. I'd have a look at Kino's (with their own modern electronic ballast) as you need to bang out a LOT of light for 12x overcrank with a large sensor, and they're dirt-common. Any decent hire place can do Kino's so just hit the phone book - however Visual Impact in Bristol may be worth a call?
