Making a short film about 1 day in a traphouse for £1,000. How do I assemble local cast and crew for it?

6 years ago - Matthew Prince

Should I buy a low budget filmmaking kit or find someone with a camera kit? And a person with a sound kit? How do I go about advertising for cast and crew? And finding a location that resembles a traphouse or can be made to look like one? The short film will be filmed and set in one location in South East London.

I've never produced and directed a short film before but I've decided to challenge myself and set aside £1,000 with additional expenses up to £250.

Hi Matthew, you can advertise for cast and crew over on Production > Get People https://shootingpeople.org/production/people
You can then specify that you are looking for someone with their own kit. There are also kit hire companies such as https://fatllama.com/ that might be of use. Best of luck with it. Molly

Hi Matthew

My advice would be to find a location that resembles your ideal location, with a budget of 1k you won't have enough money for full scale art department or set design. So work to your limitations and embrace it.

As Molly said do a shout out on Shooting people crew list and be clear and transparent with your costs and what you are trying to achieve.

Costs that you can't avoid

Food - You need to feed your crew and cast. Don't skimp on this. If they are working for free at least feed them.
Sound - ensure you get a good sound recordist. Too many shorts ignore this.
Insurance - It is what it is

Most of all have fun, collaborate and learn
