Micro-budget financing needed for graphic novel film adaption.

5 years, 8 months ago - richard kelly

Hello from Richard, i am looking for someone who can help find micro-budget financing for my planned film. The film is to be called Canterburied Tales, a supernatural take on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. My graphic novel is creator owned. For any investor there would be a producer credit. Please reply if you have micro-budget investor contacts etc, any investor could make back up to 3 times their investment. I have 7 posters and the graphic novel i can send too, please reply as polite to sagitarius215@yahoo.co.uk to know more, thanks.

"Up to 3 times their investment".

I have a financial background, (as would, most likely, any serious investor) and that is what I would view as a dangerous phrase.

a) UP TO implies an upper bound to my return. Why? This is a microbudget movie, IF it is successful it could have percentage returns right off the chart. (Though yes, I know that's highly unlikely, but still, I want my chance at the Royal Flush)

b) It's a specific return. IF I asked for more info, I'd be expecting to see a detailed revenue model to justify it. Is there one? (Given the upper bound already mentioned, I'm asking but I don't expect one...see, you made your job harder by making me wary).

TBH what I really think is "the person probably has no real idea about how this film will recoup". This might not be a problem for me if I bring sales and marketing to the table as well as an investment - I'm looking at script etc and just thinking "if I like it, I'll make it make money".

So, if it was public knowledge that ABC Channel tended to pay around £100,000 for a years exclusive film rights, and you knew that you can produce completed film for 30K, and that in your opinion, it would be perfect for ABC, then yes "based on a targeted sale to the channel we think this film would be ideal for, investors stand to recoup 3x investment" is justified*. Note - you are not publicly detailing either budget, channel or target price at this point. You would go into that privately with possible investors.

*Based on direct sale. and so long as there isn't a Points Pool....:-)
