Moving an edit project from final cut pro 5 to final cut pro 7 or X

12 years, 11 months ago - Emma Dove

Hello Shooters,

I'm currently editing a project using final cut pro 5, but I may be moving to another suite and would like to use either final cut pro 7 or X. I'm not sure how easy it will be to open up and edit the project in a different version of final cut, can anyone help me out?

The files I am editing at the moment have been transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec, but I know that 7/X usually transcode to Apple ProRes. Will this be an issue? In theory I'd like to just open up the project and go ahead and start editing, but I have an inkling it's not going to be as easy as that...!

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks all.

An FCP5 project should open in FCP7 with no problem at all (although it won't go back the other way). Getting it into FCPX is a whole other issue (it is a completely different programme) - whilst there are XML conversion tools available to do this, I personally would avoid it if at all possible.

I agree with Ben: Unless you are already well-versed in FCP X, you would be moving to an unfamiliar editing environment with a significant learning curve, this in not advisable if you are in the middle of a project. The intermediate codec will not be a problem.
