INDEXMusic for Showreel Scenes
2 years, 4 months ago - Matthew Lawrence
Hi,
Can anyone recommend some good royalty free music sites for short narrative scenes that I shoot and edit for actors to use in their showreels?
I’ve spent a bit of time looking through main ones such as Artlist and Epidemic Sound and the amount of content is a bit overwhelming and most of it seems more geared towards cinematic wedding films or epic b-roll.
I’m looking for music that can be used to score narrative scenes, similar to the examples in this video:
https://vimeo.com/808423333/21753b73d2
For short films I tend to use a composer but there isn’t the budget for my showreel clients.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Matthew

Hi Mark,
Thanks for getting back to me. Artlist was one of the ones I looked at but I didn't find it easy to find the kind of music I was looking for. Even if I filter on Mood (such as tense for example) most of the stuff sounds more like songs than a film score.
Thanks,
Matt

You could get your free music from the same place you got your free cameras, free lights, free software, free video hosting platform, free electricity, free food, etc etc.
Although, snark aside, you could ask on here in the "Get Crew" section. Composers wanting to get into film are always keen to find unscored scenes to practise on. If you do find someone willing to work for free though, please at least buy them a pint, or dinner, or something. You clearly recognise that music is going to level up your scenes, so it has value, and composers have living expenses too.
(I did a lot of this kind of thing early on, it was fun and I learned a lot, but I was at least given a token amount for my work, which was very much appreciated).

Hi, thanks for responding. Yes, I understand that music has a value and I do generally hire a composer for short films and for the couple of features I've made.
For my showreel scenes a composer wouldn't be commercially viable and stock music is definitely the way to go.
The music in the scenes of my example video is stock music. I need more music like that but I struggle to find it on the music subscription sites.
Thanks
Matthew

Have you tried any AI music generators? I haven't looked into them at all, but googling tells me there's a good few out there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm probably not going to look at AI generators until they are more established as I know there have been a few copyright issues with AI generated images, so I don't want to be one of the early adopters.
One to keep an eye on for the future though.
Thanks

Hello,
It’s pretty hard to find the music in the libraries, there are millions of soundtracks it’s hard to find exactly what you want.
Let mes give some of my Pond5 links that could suit. By the way, as a composer, we have the same problem, 99% of track have even not been seen at all!

This one is on SoundCloud

May be you don’t need the « entire » texture. For exemple, tracks who could go in your sens:

Anyway, I’m sure that any composer (and me the first) would be happy to make something descent especially to you :)
