Hi,

I am going to produce and direct a music video for an unsigned band - could anyone point me in the direction of a good template for a contract please?

Write your own agreement in plain English, it's better than something you don't understand written in Latin for an entirely different project. Include what will be included and excluded in the scope, the rate and payment schedule, timelines for production and delivery and who owns the end result when the final bill is paid. Include a line about how you'll arbitrate any disagreements not covered in the agreement, then both print and sign and keep copies. It'll stand up in court if it covers what you're agreeing in a format everyone can understand, far better than a bunch of legalese where the intention of the agreement can be argued as it was never clearly understood to begin with.

Produce and Direct?

Clause 1 - "Nothing happens until the budget, including my fee, is in the bank". If they quibble, you need the budget sans fee.

Clause 2 - "On being paid in full, band owns everything, I get to use for showreel purposes only"

Clause 3 - "Deliverables are ...... and will be provided within X days of filming."

And then don't spend anything until you have it costed to the penny and you know your fee is protected, because in the event of dispute you'll find that if you go over budget, it's coming out of your fee.
