for a documentary on 1970s Southern musicians before they deoxidize.
Any reasonably priced suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey, Graham,
Many thanks for responding so quickly.
I would guess about 1.25 hour 1/4" tape and 2 1/2 hour cassettes. But that's a good question. Only found out about project on Sunday and I haven't even unboxed them (but I do know where they are - and they've been stored at room temperature or below all these years.
Will let you know,
Lynwood (Shiva)
will do that this weekend and get back to you.

Ugh, the glue will have softened by now, they are likely to be a bit sticky and block tape heads. May be cheapest to buy a tape deck and a load of head cleaner and do your own, then clean up in http://www.soundness-llc.com/soundsoap3.html Sound Soap (which is quite surprisingly powerful considering how simple the inetrface)

If the coating has begun to separate from the backing (which there is a strong chance of if they have been stored poorly for a number of years) then the tape will need baking professionally first - just attempting to play it could render the tape un-transferrable.
I'd strongly recommend FX Copyroom. http://www.fxgroup.net/copyroom - they are experts at this sort of thing and have pretty much every machine under the sun. I don't work for them but do respect them!
