INDEXProduction companies in Brazil
11 years, 8 months ago - Betty Martins
Dear colleagues, I am not so sure this network reaches many people in Brazil, but I am developing a documentary here and I am looking for production companies. The documentary will follow the life of former militant Neuza Ladeira, focus will be given to the relation between body and memory, exploring the "status" of women in Brazil social, cultural and political context. This documentary will have a more poetic approach.
I am already signed with a company to do the funding process here but I am a bit lost (having lived in the UK for 10 years) in terms of finding the team to do this.
Can anyone help me please?
Many thanks,
Betty Martins

Hi Betty,
Brazil is teaming with production companies and talented individuals that could help you on this. How much help do you need from a company? Do you speak Portuguese? Is there not a fair amount you could co-ordinate yourself without the need for a production company? Is it more Rio or SP you need? Or neither?!
I am a UK cameraman with a base in Brazil (am in the UK at the moment though) but I may have some ideas for routes for you if can understand exactly what you need.

Hey Betty I know a really good fixer in Rio who has connections to production companies if you want an introduction? Please PM me. Thanks, Camilla.

There's an endless list, but it really depends on what budget you have and the work you want them to take on for you.

We came back from working in Brazil last month and used an incredible fixer/interpreter who used to be a journalist in the US. I would recommend her for helping you out, she is outgoing, interested in exploring new ideas and has very reasonable rates too - Marta Jump

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all great input here!!
I am actually Brazilian, from Sao Paulo, but lived in the UK for quite a long time. This next project will be done here. In terms of budget, I need to check first with the production company as we are doing the bureaucracies here, to send the proposal with budget to the MINC (ministry of culture) than to capture funding (between other ways of doing it). So I need to discuss this with the possible team to make a realistic budget (specially as I am so not used to the prices here, I don't have any equipment, and we will need to travel as well). I am already partnered with an organisation here who will transit this proposal in terms of the funding, and the team is what I am missing in my proposal (with the budget of course). I don't need a big team, specially for filming, as this is (as my other works) very intimate project, so less people is better. I will get in touch with all these people here in Sao Paulo you all suggested, thank you so much. If you know anyone else, or perhaps some professionals are here in Sao Paulo, get in touch! bettymartins@d-aep.org
Best wishes,
Betty

I would just be careful about farming out your budget to a production company if there's a fair amount of work you can do yourself.

Hi Betty, try Alessandra Côrte and Lygia Barbosa
I don't know where they are working at the moment, but they were at Bossa Nova Films. They are absolutely lovely and if they aren't interested themselves, could definitely point you in the right direction.
Good luck
