Hello everyone.
As a relatively new entrant into the directors market, are there any 'must join' organisations that I should be getting myself into in order to maximise exposure and professional credibility? Will have short number two under my belt soon, and I need to start thinking about how to make connections and get paid work in drama if it gets a decent festival run.
Any thoughts?
Chris

There are two that come to mind : - Directors UK and Directors' Guild of G.B. Suggest you have a look at both before you make your own judgement. Though I was a member of The Guild, I am now a member of Directors U.K. Amongst their functions they have meetings, contact mechanisms and look after royalties and repeats etc.

Hehehe :) I was looking at BAFTA Scotland etc and wasn't sure if there was any professional mileage in being a member other than the events they run. Which I suppose are good networking opps.

Your biggest asset will be your relationships, so networking (ugh!) is more important than any memberships per se. BAFTA certainly has some interesting events, so you'll meet some interesting people.

You can't just walk in and join BAFTA... You have to be proposed and seconded and even then only when we are told they have spaces for a particular category of membership. The Directors' Guild of GB is an obvious choice and there is The Media Lunch Club which meets once a month :-)

Hey Franz, no not as a full voting member, but you can join Scottish BAFTA as an associate or a new entrant and get access to the events. Was wondering if it was worth the £100 though.

Hi Chris, I was a member of Scottish BAFTA years ago. Apart from advance screenings of arthouse films it's a joke. Pretty much a very poor country cousin to the real BAFTA awards. They should ditch it asap. I rarely see good documentary making coming from the likes of BBC Scotland but their tartan-shortbread pap will still win.

I'm a voting member of BAFTA but have met many non members at the many events they hold there. Definitely worth the £100 as I've hired/worked with people I've met there. I'm also a member of the Media Lunch Club. Less hire powered but lovely people and good speakers.
Go to Shooters in the Pub. Raindance have some good mixers too.
I consider filmmaking a very 'social' occupation as so many different people are involved. A little networking is good for you and fun. You get to talk about film with people who like talking about film! What could be better!!

I have to disagree that the Media Lunch Club members are "less high powered" as very many are Pinewood people and I've met many wannabes at BAFTA. Many top film folk left BAFTA after they considered it had been hijacked by TV people although they are starting to return. Nice to know that Scotland is only £100 but e have to be canny before e removes the padlock from your sporran!

Thank you Franz. I look forward to meeting more people at the MLC. The one advantage is that it's a specifics networking environment so talking about your projects is encouraged whereas unless you are at a specific event at BAFTA - of which there are many - you can't just go up to David Parfitt in his meeting in the bar and start a conversation. I don't work in TV so I've only met film people there. Worth joining if you can I'd say...

Thanks guys, very helpful. And MLC sounds like a good excuse to come down and network in the capital once a month, I think that sounds ideal.

Next MLC is on Friday 19th Feb with guest speaker Paul Hitchcock (Former head of Production, Warner Bros. Europe and Independent Producer).

Cheaper if you go as a guest :-) Special offer also: join for only £10 when there!
