promotional methods when no much showreel material?

I was just wondering If anyone has any useful suggestions for continuing career when you don't have much available showreel material. I'm still waiting to see more of the shoots from 2012 but any concept to continue demonstrating one's skill standard (cinematography wise/lighting wise)???

Make your own short to show off your skills?
Get a stills portfolio together showing your mastery of compposition and lighting?
Ask producers for 10 second clips from those previous projects that you can grade up and montage?
