INDEXPublic Liability Insurance?
7 years, 5 months ago - Gregory Fishwick
Hi,
I'm looking to hire a location for a short film shoot and they're asking for a copy of our public liability insurance. To be expected, I guess but I haven't had any experience with this yet. Any pieces of advice regarding insurance would be very welcome, including who best to approach; I've looked at a few sites for quotes but am a little overwhelmed by the questions and am not sure how to tailor them towards a short film shoot! Like I said, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

For shorts, try Essex Insurance Brokers, they have a good understanding of short film needs and are fairly priced. You'll also need equipment hire insurance which they'll also do. Likely Employers Liability too. Again, inexpensive, but necessary.

Hi Greg,
You may have already sourced the insurance already but if not, or next time, do feel free to give us (Performance Film & Media) a call on 0208 256 4932. Although the insurance will be purchased online in a process that should take 6/7 minutes, we're happy to talk through your project and give you some steer before you purchase.
All the best with your short film!

Sorry to be so late to input but, I've often found that for the cost to insure/cover shooting your average short for a week, for twice the amount you can get a full years cover. OK if you only intend to shoot the one short, not worth considering, but it motivated me to shoot three shorts and a doco piecemeal in a year, so the insurance on the third film and doco was, so to speak, completely free.
Simpsons quote: "You've got to squeeze every penny", yeah I know...the context was joke one but D'oh, as an indie filmmaker, insurance costs are prohibitively expensive when you are on a tight budget and I would never, ever shoot without insurance, so having it for the year really did enable me to shoot much more often.

Hi Greg,
If you're a member of Bectu you get £10m annual public liability cover for £31 a year, in fact that may be waived if you join the union for the first time now before 30 April. You can also access media freelancer insurance deals negotiated on block too.
