Query on Blu-ray disc image file size - Toast

3 years, 11 months ago - Matthew Lawrence

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with Roxio Toast on the Mac. I’m looking to create a simple Blu-Ray, no menu. I exported the film from Davinci Resolve as a 1080p MP4 file and the file size is 21GB (the film is 100 mins).

My disc holds 25GB so I set “Reencoding” to “Never” in the encoding tab in Toast as I don’t want it to re-encode the file. However, the disc image it created is only 7.78 GB. I’m confused as I asked it not to re-encode.

If I adjust the Average Bit Rate and Maximum Bit Rate settings it will make the disc image file size bigger. Does this mean that Toast is re-encoding the file, despite “Reencoding” being to “Never”?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for Average and Maximum bit rate settings so I can get the highest quality without causing playback problems?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matthew.

Making just the MP4 container file, is not actually the format that the Blu-ray disc is using. It does use the h.264 codec, however all the parameters will need to be correct in order to be compliant with the Blu-ray specs. The Toast will not be able to use your mp4 file without re-encoding it, because of this and hence you are having the re-encoded file on your final disc or disc image. To get the absolute best out of your film on the Blu-ray, it is best to encode the Blu-ray compliant file from either the Apple Pro-Res 422HQ or similar with no prior high compression applied to the file.
Best to use professional service such us our Blu-ray Authoring service as the Toast does not Author fully compliant Blu-ray disc, meaning that some players will reject it.
I do offer 10% discount on the Blu-ray authoring and duplication for members of SP.

Hope this helps.
Please contact if you do need it done professionally.

Best wishes.

Hi Madis,

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the advice. That's really helpful.

I'll definitely keep you in mind if I need professional Blu-ray or DVD authoring in the future.

Thanks,
Matthew
