INDEXRe: Common Posting

Hi Shooters,
Just read the following which I've seen several times now in various postings;
"The film is self-funded, so no budget..."
Hmmm. Forgive if I'm completely wrong about this, but does this and many like it imply that because it is their own money, they are not willing to pay? anything (bar expenses)? but they would be quite willing to spend other's money, almost at will?
Which other industry would that ever happen in?
"I'm sorry, I can't pay you Mr. Plumber, because that would mean drawing funds from my own bank account and I'm afraid I need that money to pay for my new kitchen fittings."
And how exactly do you make a film without setting a budget or being set a budget?
Does this imply?
"I'm willing to pay an infinite amount on certain roles/aspects to get the film I want but i'm not willing to pay for the role of (INSERT) because I do not value that role enough to warrant paying for it."
I'm well aware that I have a huge bee in my bonnet over pay, etc, but the fact is I'm currently in Pre-Production for my next short and the simple fact is, although it will be a skeletal crew, in no more than two locations (all considered in a BUDGET) every one will be paid, heavily discounted rates YES, but 100% self-funded, and paid none the less, as I feel the only way a film can truly be considered collaborative is if everyone is TRULY VALUED and that mean's being paid an agreed (living wage at the very least), negotiated rate (and that maybe for FREE as a favour, but NEGOTIATED none the less) or as many others have also done, EVERYONE is paid the same (maybe nothing, maybe £100 per day).
At the very least, please do not tell the world you cannot pay, because it is self-funded.
Pheeewww! I'm done...
Time to take cover...

Self funded means it's a hobby project, not an industry one. Get involved if you like the project. If you're cast/crew and at a loose end it's good to keep your hand in, IF you believe that it will be well organised.
OR offering no money might be a good way of not getting swamped. I've recently posted a casting for a personal project but I want GOOD actors so offered actual money. Not a lot, but some. 130 replies in the first two days. If I'd done the same for crew I'd be looking at 1000 CVs by now :-)
I'm like you - my project is a hobby one, but actors need paying, so I'm paying. Everything else, that's all me :-)
