INDEXRealistic gun replica, can anyone help?
11 years, 7 months ago - Shahid 'Shez' Hussain
Hello everyone.
Realistic gun replica (9mm or similar) with blowback feature needed for a day shoot.
Does anyone know where I could rent one? If someone on here has one, I will happily pay to rent it for the day.
I will need it for the 21st of December.
I have had a look on the internet and to purchase one will cost something like £100.
Please help.
Thanks

Do be sure you follow all laws and guidelines when using a realistic imitation firearm on a film production. The police are getting a lot stricter and there have been several arrests this year on both large and small productions. You will need to inform the local council and the police to obtain a film weapon CAD. Film London has the following guidelines
"Filmweapon CAD. A message created by the police to notify local officers and armed response teams that firearms or weapons or being used whilst filming.
No weapons or firearms of any kind, including prop or replica firearms, shall be used without agreement in advance between the Production and the Police and/or appropriate emergency service and the Film Contact. A Filmweapon CAD number must also be obtained from the police. This includes when filming exteriors and/or interiors on public
and private property.
Where it is a live firing weapon the Production must have a licence holder for that weapon present, or a Registered Firearms Dealer (RFD) or a servant of the RFD."
Whilst film makers get away with many things without permission or not playing by the book this is not one you should try or you will be facing the barrel of a real gun and then arrest, being a film maker is a defence not an exemption to firearms law.
Unfortunately I won't be in London on those dates but If you would like any more advise feel free to contact me.
All the best,
Joe

Thanks Tom, I had a look at the Tanaka works website, great products, I will email them requesting delivery info and cost etc.
Hi Alice, I had a look on the website and the prices are way too high, and adding muzzle effects is an option. Thank you
Thanks Dan, I’m on the website now, looks good so far, but I don’t see the prices. I will email you.
Hi Joe for the pointers, I am now fully aware of the laws and have read the guide lines, cheers.
Thank you to all for taking the time, and providing such helpful information.

Hi Shahid,
There are guns that are made specifically for filming and theatre, they are produced in Japan by Tanaka Works. If you can find one second hand then it's exactly what your looking for. They are basically cap guns but the explosive cap sits inside a 9mm casing, it loads exactly like a real gun and when fired gives a realistic muzzle flash, muzzle smoke, the slide recoils to load the next and the case is extracted and the best thing about them is they make hardly any noise so no need for ear defenders.
Unfortunately I'm not around on the 21st else I would have rented myself and a bunch of film weapons to you. Good luck with your search.

Hi Shahid
You could ask Arundel Militaria (http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk) who provided one for a shoot recently. They have all kinds of guns but rather than rent them, they offered me a deal where I paid for it and they then bought it back for a lower price. Very efficient and helpful. Perhaps you could add effects afterwards?
