Recommend a PC for video editing in Premier Pro CC

6 years, 8 months ago - Mark Tully

Hi,

I'm looking to get a PC for video editing in Premier Pro CC. I was doing some research around Cyber Monday but got a little confused with all the options.

It seems to come down to either a work station that is designed for video editing predominately or something more generalist that could also perform other tasks like VR gaming. I'm not into VR Gaming at present but would like if I make the investment now that it would be capable of running something like the Vive Pro down the line.

I heard Chill Blast make good video editing PCs so they have made the following suggestions to me

Video editing only workhorse
Intel Core i9 / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060/ £2750
https://www.chillblast.com/chillblast-fusion-photo-oc-viii-x299-photo-editing-pc.html?category_id=415

Generalist Editing and Gaming
AMD Ryzen Threadripper / Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 / £2650
https://www.chillblast.com/chillblast-fusion-threadripper-2-ultimate-4k-video-editing-pc.html?category_id=412

They also said that the Ryzen isn't a great chip compared to the i9 and could upgrade to that an extra £200.

I also checked with Overclockers who suggested the following that was optimised for PP:
Intel i7 / Palit GeForce GTX 1070 / £2700)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/renda-g3-pp-post-production-workstation-frequency-enhanced-intel-core-i7x-i9x-fs-215-op.html

Frankly, I was surprised how expensive these PCs are. Is this power necessary? I am looking to edit footage shot on Arri Alexa Mini.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm not up to date with prices, but I feel you would be spending far more than you would need to to get the job done. I edited a short filmed in 4K RAW and I was comfortable with the speed I got from my system. I didn't use proxy files, either, but rendered the RAW files in the timeline as I edited/ graded.Putting a system like mine together would leave you with money left over to buy hard drives or maybe even a good grading monitor, especially if you are prepared to buy used components on ebay and put the system together yourself. I bought my processor and motherboard used on ebay.

I edited using Adobe Premiere Pro. I also used Adobe After Effects and Adobe Audition.

My system:

GPU - Zotac Amp Edition Geforce GTX 980 Ti (not overclocked)

Processor - i7 5960x (not overclocked)

Motherboard - MSI : X99A GAMING 7 (MS-7885) 3.0 (not overclocked)

Corsair Hydro Series H80i v2 CPU Cooler

32GB RAM 2133MHz (not overclocked)

OS and all programs on a 250GB SSD

1000W water PSU (probably more powerful than required)

All in a big Corsair case

In addition, 6 x 4TB 7200RPM hard drives (eventually needed because I didn't delete any of the 4K RAW footage files or any of the zillions of uncompressed .avi files that arose during the edit of my film)

At UCL's Open City Docs School we recently bought for our VR work these pcs and they will last a good while... - more powerful than you need but with durability built in:

Y1B39AV HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Tower PC from CJ-UCL-19062017-01 UCL-PROC 469
W6R96AV#ABU Business Slim USB Wired Keyboard from CJ-UCL-19062017-01 UCL-PROC 469
M1P04AA#ABU HP EliteDisplay E272q 27-inch Monitor from CJ-UCL-19062017-01 UCL-PROC 469
at total educational price of c £1.7k

We have also started using these: Lenovo ThinkVision P27u 4K monitor (£366 at Educational price) and attaching powerful laptops to them. The 4k screen is great and this way you get two screens for the price of one...
