INDEXRecommendations for a light meter
6 years ago - Michael Spry
I'm looking to buy a light meter, there are a few options, all are expensive. Is second hand worth it or more trouble then its worth?
I've looked into the Lumu meter you attach to your phone, which looks good but still expensive.
Any recommendations?

For an Incident meter, anything by Sekonic. If you want a Spot Meter, if you can get hold of a Minolta you can’t go wrong.

I recently bought a Lumu and have found it useful. Tested it beside a gaffers sekonic light meter and colour meter and it was spot on. I find I rarely use meters anymore so it is really handy to just have in the kit bag. If I was exposing film I'd go back to using the real deal meters like Mark mentioned above. Just a note if you are buying second hand, check when they were last calibrated, I've heard some horror stories.

Installing the Cine Meter II app for your phone, buying the small and cheap Luxi light meter attachment and calibrating the combination on your phone is a great affordable way to improve your understanding of colour and exposure without having to spend a lot of money on a light meter. Really helpful especially with Kelvin readings for filming video.

Michael, I've got a Sekonic incident meter from my gaffering days, comes with a 5 degree (i think) spot attachment. Been meaning to ebay it for months, I'll dig it out of my camera bag when I get home and DM you, see if it's of interest.
