INDEXRecommended kit for Canon 600D
13 years, 3 months ago - Adam Bromley
Apologies if these questions have been answered numerous times before. Rejoining this forum after a year or two's absence. Looking to some add ons for Canon 600D, wondered what people's recommendations are:
- tripod (preferably nothing too heavy)
- shoulder mount & follow focus
- LCD monitor (to use with the above)
I shot a short about 18 months ago with Canon 5D, using the 600D as the second camera. Think kit has moved on a bit since then. Google/E-Bay research bit inconclusive so shared wisdom much appreciated.
This rig will really just be for handheld work or using it as 2nd camera, but good to be able to shoot without hiring in. Got some decent lenses (LSeries 24 -105 probably most useful, 2 good primes 30mm and L135).
Thanks again for any tips.

Hey, you might get millions of replies on this. Here's mine!
Shoulder mount I use which is nicely built, easy to assemble and transport,
and you can mount the follow focus on a tripod, includes Matte Box only
£180ish http://tinyurl.com/ctn25ov
LCD monitor. If you literally only need to "monitor" the focus etc, and aren't
bothered about accurate colour/contrast you can get 7inch monitors for about
£100-£200 (make sure you get one with a decent changeable battery plate -
some come with adapters for Canon batteries even. Avoid the ones with an
internal battery). e.g. http://tinyurl.com/d9asy5s These are no good for
setting colour balance/exposure/etc though - i set this using the camera's
display, then switch the monitor on when shooting for focus etc. You'd need
to spend £400+ for a proper HD monitor which would be maybe 5" screen
Also watch out for the HDMI cable you buy - the 550D has an awkward slot for
the HDMI cable and only certain cables will fit. The 600D may be similar.
And the cables are really filmsy (the small HDMI end bends/breaks with
incredible ease!) so try get one with a flexible end to avoid strain (e.g.

Tripods - if you need a proper fluid head tripod with solid legs you can get a
fairly good one for about £150 e.g. http://tinyurl.com/cqpq5n9 (these come
with a bag/shoulder strap and aren't too heavy (5kg)
Hope that helps.

Hey Adam.
There is so much cheap and really good quality stuff out there:
For a lightweight tripod, I would recommend:

or even better
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Velbon-Video-DV-6000-Fluid-Head-Video-Tripod-/120868658021?pt=UK_Tripods_Monopods&hash=item1c24555b65

The Velbon, although a bit oldshool, is actually very smooth. Probably the best value for money.
Shoulder rigs with follow focus:
This is probably the cheapest way to get a follow focus and a shoulder rig. A bit cheapish and plasticky, but works. Used this setup, works surprisingly well:

And this is an amazing peace of kit that is still amazingly cheap comparing to big brands. I have a very similar and the quality is top notch, very solid.Something to keep for years to come. Don't have to use it just with 600D, will work with any DSLR or even one of the new large chip camcorders. The follow focus that comes with it is also one of the best budget FFs out there. The whole rig is miles ahead of the one above. It all depends on your budget:

For LCD I use a 5" Liliput, quite a new model, so it doesn't stretch out the image when you press record (the problem I have with my 5D MK|| and I thing 600D is the same). It works quite well and offer great value for money.
