recommended workflow for screenwriting into pre-production?

10 years, 6 months ago - Steve Micalef

Hi. I'm a film-maker who hasn't made a film for a while and technology being what it is, I thought I'd ask the community to update me.

I am embarking on writing a script but I want to hit the ground running with pre-production. I'm imagining software such as moviemagic (is that still around and fabulous?) that I can either use for writing my script and formatting it for me, while I can also put my notes about characters, locations, scenes, props, etc. etc. as I go.

Otherwise, what is the best software to use for writing my script, which I will later be able to easily import into production / scheduling software without having to rewrite everything?

thanks in advance

The de facto professional software is and has always been Final Draft. I know some others who would disagree and some who would refuse to pay for it. However, all professional writers that I know use it. Period. It allows you to add notes etc as you go.

There's also the Movie Magic Screenwriter software, probably not as standard in the uk as final draft, but it allows all those breakdowns that then transfer easily into movie magic scheduling, that then transfers easily into movie magic budgeting (which then flows well into 'vista', an accounting and reporting package, which in turn drives payroll etc). But don't get too hung up on what's going on downstream, Celtx may do you just fine!
