ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXResolve and premiere pro
2 years, 2 months ago - Andrea Dagher
hello hello
I'm having problems understanding color grading.
I have a premiere pro project in which I added many effects. When I link it to resolve to color grade, it tells me that I can't import the edit with the effects.
Do we have to import the edited project (on resolve) without the effects, do the color grading and then add back again all the effects? I feel like it takes too much time, especially if it's a feature movie. What's the right way to do it?

Hi Andrea,
I had a similar issue some time ago. If it helps, I made a short - I edited the project [and added fx in Openshot] rendered the file [as .MOV] and imported the file into Davinci Resolve in order to grade and add the 5.1 audio mix.
Before you import the file into Resolve, are you rendering the file? If not, you may have to. Then use Resolve's tools to grade and, if you are feeling brave, try and use Fusion to add additional fx.
I hope that helps - and I apologise if I've misunderstood your issue!
Good luck.
Dave

Hey
I'm not a colourist but
What type of effects are on the edit? And are you trying to import the sequence into Davinci? Are you conforming via XML?
Speed ramps, 3rd party plugins and some other FXs won't work in Davinci. You also don't want things like text etc etc.
What you can do is export a Quicktime 4444 etc etc and Davinci can work out the edits

Hi Andrea,
You're right, it's usually quite involved when going from an offline edit, to conform and online, especially when vfx is involved.
Unfortunately, if you've already applied a lot of final effects in Premiere, you may need to redo or work around some issues.
Typically a film will have an offline edit first, maybe with temp vfx if coming from outside vendors. Once the cut is locked, there's a conform (low quality proxies to camera original) with final vfx, followed by the grade and online edit / finish. A lot of the final or NLE style effects would happen at this 'online' stage, because of the issues you've mentioned. Even simple things like reframing and retiming often don't translate from one application to another.
You might be able to 'round trip' your project (from Premiere, to Resolve and back again) without any effects applied.
This means you don't need to reapply any effects, you should just relink to your graded clips, perform any finishing steps and then master out from Premiere.
But it would mean having to grade entire clips for them to relink in Premiere (I think). Resolve can export individual clips from a grade, but I'm not sure how well that would relink in premiere.
As someone else suggested, it might be easiest to render out your timeline with the fx applied as something like ProRes 4444, grade that (Resolve has an auto cut feature that helps, called 'Scene Cut Detection'.) and bring it back into Premiere for finishing.
Or you could do the colour in Premiere using Lumetri. That's probably what I would do in this situation, much simpler and you keep control of your edit if you want to make changes later.
Sorry if that's not much help and hope you get it sorted.

Hello Andrea.
I have really good Colour grading software plug in, that works inside the Premiere Pro, which is easy to use and I can help you with as well. For a day rate of £150,
you could bring your Premiere Project into my office and get it done here, using my system. The system is Mac based and I have the fast NAS drive and is capable of running the edit in full res and quality. I'm based in Kings Cross, just off Grays Inn Road. Please let me know. I can also assist you a little on the side within the cost.
Please let me know if you would like to do this. Please email me if you are. I do make DCP masters too, if this is you'll need to be created after.
Thank you.
