Run & Gun

Hi there,

Thanks so much for all the tips on funding before. I've not secured funding yet but wanted to ask some advice on run and gun shooting.

I'm working on a documentary on hunt saboteuring and was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting good footage on the go? I don't want to bring a gimbal because it would be too much to carry around but I was thinking of maybe prioritising get long shots from afar and mixing that with talking heads? I reckon anything closeby might end up shaky.

I toyed with whacking a go-pro on my head but that also might end up ridiculously shaky. If I get funding I may pivot to having voiceovers and animated sections for the saboteur parts which would work beautifully!

Yup,

I made over 80 documentaries for TV. For run and gun, open the lens as wide as it will go and then you will nearly always be in focus. Don't zoom, but use your legs to move you in and out to get as close or as far away as need be, and you'll still be in focus. Only use the zoom where absolutely essential, and if you can, always have it on the sticks when zooming in, out or panning. Unless you're an expert cameraman. Good, clean sound is imperative too. Beware of win and mic rattle. Good luck, Richard www.razorfilms.co.uk

I'm a big fan of the DJI Osmo Pocket series. For me it ticks all the boxes for run 'n gun stuff. I read a piece in one of the trade mags, might have been Zerb, that war reporters in Ukraine are using the latest model. Normal aspect ratios, no fish-eye lenses. 5v power so can use any old power bank continuously. The SMALL gimbal on top keeps everything reasonably smooth. Most important of all, its shape and size makes for very easy / convenient usability. There's no stress on the wrist in continuous shooting, meaning that you can take your eye off it every few seconds to pay attention to the actual reality. Etc, etc. I could go on. I'm a fan !
