SD card fast download

9 years, 11 months ago - Gavin Boyter

I'm about to make a film where I'll be shooting a lot of material onto SD cards. What very fast method can I use to transfer the footage to external hard drive using a PC? At the moment it's taking up to 6 hours per 64GB card (I'm shooting 4K).

The 'class' of the card and whatever reader you're using will determine timings.

Class 10+ through a USB3 reader (in a USB3 port - a blue one) will be a heap faster than a class 4 card on a USB 2 reader

I think that it will come down to the read/write speed of your SD card. Check to see what it is.

I use cards that can handle 100 MB/s and for 32GB takes less than an hour to offload. The 4k from an Inspire 1 (60MB/s) doesn't take long at all...
