Seeking photographs of Jazz Musicians & Boxers with cleared rights from the 1940s (prior to 1948). Any advice would be very helpful.

Dear all,
I am seeking to obtain copyrights for photographs from the 1940s, specifically prior to 1948. I've been researching this for the past few months, and its proving to be quite difficult as there are two levels of rights, one is for the person appearing in the image and the other is the rights of the photographer.

I am specifically seeking images of Jazz Musicians & Boxers from that era. Images available in the public domain or in the library of congress or at Getty images, still require getting clearances from the people appearing in those images or their estate & so far the people in those images or their representatives have been quite unresponsive.

My budget is quite limited too, so its another challenge. The photographs are for use in the background only to provide historic accuracy, but they are a must to have, however, I am quite flexible on who appears in it as long as its someone who was a jazz musician or boxer in that era.

Your advice will be much appreciated as I have a ticking deadline.
Cheers,
Reem

And I go back to the notion of staging photographs.

In New York, seek out Frank Driggs. Years ago, I
Worked in a popular photography lab that had an impressive list of clientele. Mr.Driggs has an extensive library.

Likely that means you won't get them 100% cleared.

Yeah, the problem is, back in the 1940s not all clearances were obtained, and so to use images of well known people or not, in a work that might spread to international festivals or to be sold for users (its an innovative app showing a glimpse of Vancouver in 1948 by a significant artist), so all rights must be 100% cleared including those appearing in the photographs and those of the creator of those photographs.

Ever thought of using new photos that you staged?
