Selling a Script

6 years, 5 months ago - Jayne Slater

Hi,

I'm trying to build myself as a script writer and some people I've come across have mentioned that they sell their scripts. I've seen some sites that talk of selling scripts but, I just wondered if anyone has success selling scripts (I should mention mine are shorts) and what site you guys find is the best to use?

I'm not sure that anyone is actually paying for shorts.

Features and TV series, that's where the money is, so that's what you can sell. But selling a script, as an unknown, it's "don't give up the day job" and be aware that you can do EVERYTHING RIGHT, investing a lot of time and money and still fail to sell, simply because on the day the people who read it, read it, it's not what they are looking for.

I do believe that the BBC has (had?) a scheme that brings in new writers (puts them on soaps etc), and that once you are inside the tent, you might get useful access.

Jayne, Though I am an experienced television drama director, I too have also written a collection of short film screenplays which I am now trying to progress to production. I am discovering this is a more difficult market place than television, or even feature films, because shorts are not usually transmitted on television or exhibited in cinemas. However, there may be new or student directors looking for scripts so perhaps approach universities and colleges media departments or post on Shooting People Script Pitch. I have actually sold a few short scripts. Not for huge sums of money; a few hundred quid. I think those might have been through job postings on shooting people or mandy... but generally selling a short script is pretty rare.

You best bet would be to make your short scripts available for free to try and make a name for yourself. You can post here or inktip has a short script section which I think is free to post on.

I've been writing for 17 years and only ever been paid for a short twice. Most of the time you get them made to further your career (Get a name for yourself). There's just no money in short scripts, and no special site that buys them.
