INDEXSelling my DVDs
8 years, 6 months ago - Jaye L Swift
Hi everyone
I have recently had my short film made into high quality DVDs. They are all intended to be given to everyone who helped make my film from the actors, to the crew and a whole load of other people - my way of saying thank you.
I posted a photograph of the box of DVDs on my Facebook and quite a few people have asked if they can buy one.
Now I'm not sure about the legalities of this, as I never licenced my film (too expensive on my minuscule budget).
Can I sell my DVDs? If I did sell them for a small profit, all profits would go to the Royal British Legion. If I am not allowed to sell them for a small profit, can I sell them for what they cost me?
Many thanks for any advice.
Jaye

Hi Jaye, I think you're getting so few answers because nobody can tell you for sure. Nobody has seen your film, nobody knows if it's full of unlicensed content or all your own. Nobody knows the subject, or if you need BBFC rating.
To be honest, if you keep it on the downlow you can almost certainly get away with anything. Just sell direct without lots of promotion, or better still suggest people send a £x donation to your British Legion branch, and You can send them a download copy or private YouTube/vimeo link - then everyone wins.

When we made our short film Waters End we produced a Special Version on DVD with some "Extras" making it an attractive buy. This proved a winner as we sold over 3000 copies either direct to customers who sent us cheques via our website details or indirectly through our local Steam Railway's online shop as we had filmed mostly on the railway. They bought about a 100 DVDs at a time at a discount rate, and sold them in their station shops & online. The profits supported their train operations.
For our latest Animation we have a Distributor in place, and other outlets who've contacted us who want to sell the DVD. Good news, but you still have to tell friends about your project to create interest as commercial advertising is expensive.
